North Carolina’s Water Resources Research Institute is accepting proposals for projects in three categories identified by the U.S. Geological Survey. North Carolina researchers must submit proposals through WRRI by 5 p.m. on June 17, 2021.

The high-priority research needs identified for 2021 are:

  • National, regional or interstate water-focused research meeting current priorities: socioeconomics and water use; harmful algal blooms; and water-related hazards and public health.
  • Per-and polyflouroalkyl substances (PFAS) research, as related to the nation’s water quality.
  • Aquatic invasive species in the Upper Mississippi River Basin.

“We are pleased that NC WRRI can connect researchers from diverse communities and disciplines with these outstanding USGS research opportunities,” notes John Fear, NC WRRI deputy director.

Proposals should reflect collaboration among university-based researchers and USGS scientists, along with other partners. Plans for distribution of results should be clearly presented, and student support is strongly encouraged, Fear adds.

NC WRRI strongly encourages proposals from applicants at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Minority Serving Institutions, and/or from traditionally underserved and underrepresented communities, as well as proposals that demonstrate how projects and related outreach will benefit underserved and underrepresented communities.

Details on proposal submission are provided in the official USGS notices available for download from NC WRRI: wrri.ncsu.edu/research/funding. Researchers can send questions regarding research topics to John Fear at jmfear@nsu.edu. Budget questions should be directed to Mary Beth Barrow at mebarrow@ncsu.edu.

University researchers must supply a letter of support from their institution and secure approval from their campus office of sponsored research.

Complete proposals and budget documentation must be submitted to NC WRRI by email to  jmfear@ncsu.edu and mebarrow@ncsu.edu by June 17, 2021 at 5 p.m., for review ahead of the national deadline.
